November 17, 2009, (Sawf News) - The first of the three additional Project 11356 class frigates on order for the Indian Navy and under construction at Yantar shipyard in Russia's Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad, will be floated on November 27.
"The frigate is due to be floated out on November 27," a shipyard official was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti.
The Indian Navy currently operates three Russian Krivak-class stealth frigates. They are INS Talwar (2002), Trishul (2003) and Tabar (Jul 2004). Additional ships are on order from Russia.
India and Russia signed a $1.6 billion contract for the construction of an additional three Project 11356 Krivak III-class guided missile frigates for the Indian Navy in July, 2006.
The new lot, to be delivered by 2011-12, will be armed each with eight BrahMos supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles instead of the Club-N/3M54TE missiles, which were installed on previous frigates.
The three new ships were christened in October 2009 as INS Teg [Saber], INS Tarkash [Quiver], and INS Trikand [Bow].
Russia and India are negotiating a new contract on the delivery of additional Project 11356 frigates for the Indian navy, the head of Russia's arms exporter said on Wednesday, February 4, 2009.
