November 11, 2009, (Sawf News) - The Indian Army Chief, General Deepak Kapoor, during his recent visit to Israel confirmed India's intent to go ahead with joint development of the Barak-8 system with Israel.
General Kapoor visited Israel for four days from November 7 – 10, 2009.
India inked a $1.1 billion deal with Israel in April 2009 for joint development of the Barak-8 tactical Air and Missile Defense (AMD).
The deal was announced in June 2009 by an Israeli official.
Deliveries are expected to start in 2017.
Kickback Allegations
Doubts arose about the deal following kickback allegations against London-based Indian businessman, Sudhir Choudhrie, who was named by Israeli daily Haaretz as a key broker in the deal.
Choudhrie denies any wrongdoing but the deal is under probe by India's Central Bureau of Investigations as Indian law forbids the use of middlemen in arms purchase.
