    "Boeing believes the Apache and Chinook helicopters are the most capable and cost-effective rotorcraft to meet India's defense and transport requirements," said Vivek Lall, vice president and India country head for Boeing Integrated Defense Systems. "The Apache will be a capable and lethal defender of India's troops and assets, while the Chinook will answer many of the country's military and humanitarian needs."

    The 2.5t-class attack helicopters will replace IAF's aging fleet of Mi-35 helicopters.

    The contract for the 37 helicopters is estimated to be worth $2 billion.

    Attack Helicopter - Tiger is out
    By Jupp on Saturday, October 24, 2009 (EST)
    "European aviation major Eurocopter has opted out of the race for supplying 22 attack helicopters to the Indian Air Force, leaving contenders from the United States, Russia and Italy in the fray.Eurocopter has conveyed to the Defence Ministry that its Tiger attack helicopters are undergoing upgrades and would not be able to participate in the field trials, which the IAF is planning to hold in mid-2010, sources told.

    The company apprised the Ministry of its decision on October 20 -- the last date for submitting the response to the global tender released in May this year, they added.With the exit of Eurocopter, only Boeing with its AH-64D Apache, Agusta Westland with its AW-149 and Russian helicopter manufacturer Mil are left behind in the race, sources said."

    Soon, GPS wrist watches for special forces in J&K
    By dhruva0211 on Monday, October 26, 2009 (EST)
    This article, which states that Indian army is all set to procure GPS-enabled wrist watches for its special forces in Kashmir, is written in an almost congratulatory tone. However, I find it rather ironic that we have taken this decision only after we discoved that terrorists have started using it. That too in small numbers. All US soldiers would be already equipped with it.

    It is as if there is no forward thinking going on in the top echelons of armed forces.

    =================================================

    The Indian Army is all set to equip its special forces with Global Positioning System (GPS) wrist watches to help them in operations against militants in Jammu and Kashmir.

    With the aim of giving special forces a technological edge over terrorists, Northern command headquarters had recently floated tenders for the purchase of high-tech multi-utility GPS wrist watches, defence sources said.

    In the first phase, 120 such GPS watches would be procured and sealed bids -- both technical and commercial -- have been invited from the bidders in this regard.

    Dozens of GPS devices have been recovered from infiltrating terrorists during encounters along the Line of Control (LoC) during the past year, they said.

    "Terrorists are frequently using GPS devices for infiltration and reaching their guides along LoC. The watches are used by terrorists for navigation," the sources said.

    The GPS wrist watches sourced by the army will have 20 channels all-in-view tracking with a large LCD and 80000 tracking points.

    "The watches will gives forces an edge to identify terrain and plan their strategy for operations," the defence sources said.
