December 31, 2008, (Sawf News) - HAL has place two serial production orders with SAAB for the Integrated Defensive Aids Suite (IDAS) for the Indian Advanced Light Helicopter Dhruv.

The combined value of these orders from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is approximately SEK 196 million.

The IDAS will be installed on India's weapon systems version of Advanced Light Helicopter, also known as Dhruv, to provide these platforms with Electronic Warfare self-protection. The helicopter features a modern glass cockpit with which the IDAS system is fully integrated.

These two production orders follow initial orders for development and prototype deliveries as well as the first series production order received earlier this year for the Indian Dhruv helicopter.

The development and production will take place at Saab Avitronics in Centurion, South Africa.

IDAS is the world's most comprehensive integrated Electronic Warfare suite for airborne platforms and has been the choice for the Denel Rooivalk and Oryx, NH Industries NH90, Agusta Westland Super Lynx 300 and A109, Boeing CH47 Chinook, Eurocopter Cougar and Super Puma.

    Dhurv vs. others
By Anadi on Friday, January 02, 2009 (EST)
    Hi Mr. Thakur,

A happy & prosperous new year 2009 to you & your family

In your opinion, where does Dhruv stand vis-a-vis attack helicopters from AgustaWestland, Boeing, Eurocopter, Khazan and Bell incorporations?

I recently learned that IAF had shown more interest in non-HAL helicopters while finalizing orders for 80 attack helicopters. But HAL somehow got away with a contract of 58 Dhruv choppers (after a CCS meeting in new delhi) & only 22 remained in fray for the competition

    Regards

    Anadi,

    Happy New Year!

IAF pilots who have flown the Dhruv are happy with it. The only problem with the LCH, the attack version of Dhruv, is that it is not operational. HAL is not completely ready with its act though the helicopter has promise.

The question is: should the IAF be asked to wait for the LCH to become operational, something that has already taken much longer than expected, or induct the LCH as an when it is operational in numbers?

Also, the LCH is not a dedicated attack helicopter and as such is unlikely to present a better option than a helicopter like the Tiger.

My understanding is that Dhruv is in the running for the 22 attack helicopters proposed to be acquired as a replacement for Mi-35s.

    Vijainder
