    MiG-29M MRCA

This version of the MiG-29 overcomes some of the range and payload limitation of the earlier version. It continues to remain perhaps the most nimble close combat fighter in the world.

The MiG-29M/MiG-29M2 single-seat/two-seat aircraft versions are longer range derivatives of the original MiG-29. The aircraft supports improved avionics, a four fold redundant, three-channel, fly-by-wire system, higher weapon load and extended range of carried weapons. This version of the aircraft can be refueled in-flight.

The cockpits are equipped with liquid-crystal multifunction displays (MFDs) and support HOTAS operations.

The integrated weapon control system incorporates the radar fire-control system built around the ZHUK-ME airborne radar, IR search and track (IRST) system and helmet-mounted target designation system.

It takes a mere second for the helmet-mounted target designator, used to quickly lock on visually detected targets, to send target data to the IR surveillance and tracking radar or directly to the homing head of the missile ensuring accuracy, enough to effectively employ the weapon.

Data exchange between the radar and the IRST system has considerably improved the effectiveness of targetting, making it difficult to jam.

The ZHUK-ME radar can detect air targets at ranges of up to 120 km. It supports track-while-scan of ten targets and attack of four targets at a time. In scanning surface targets, the radar detection range of destroyer-type target is 250 km and that of missile launcher-type target is 150 km.

The weapons suite of the aircraft includes the GSh-301 built-in gun and the R-27R1 and R-73E air-to-air missiles. The unguided weapons load is attached to six hard-points.

    The aircraft external stores can carry the RVV-AE, R-27ER1, R-27ET1, R-27R1, R-27T1, R-73E (AA-11 Archer) air-to-air missiles, the Kh-29T, Kh-29L, Kh-31A (AS-17 Krypton), Kh-31P (AS-17A Krypton), Kh-35E (AS-20 Kayak) air-to-surface missiles, the KAB-500KR (OD), KAB-500L guided bombs, as well as rockets and free-fall bombs. Besides, the aircraft have the GSh-301 built-in gun.

The aircraft can be retrofitted for installation of equipment and weapons of non-Russian origin

Because of delays in its planned induction, the Tejas does not adequately address the current and future threats faced by the IAF. There is a strong case for encouraging the IAF and ADA to think beyond the Tejas
