June 20, 2008 - The Russian Kamov Ka-50 attack helicopter is one of the contenders for IAF's $500 million RFP for 22 attack helicopters.

Other contenders for the order are

    • Boeing AH-64D Apache Longbow
    • Eurocopter Tiger
    • AgustaWestland AW129
    • Bell AH-1Z SuperCobra
    • Mil Mi-28
    • HAL’s Light Combat Helicopter

The useful graphic below, reproduced with permission from RIA Novosti, details capabilities of the latest version of the helicopter, the basic version of which has been in service for over 25 years.

It is likely the IAF will consider only the twin seat version of the helicopter, Ka-52 Alligator or Ka-50-2 Erdogan, since the single seat configuration will impose an unacceptable pilot load in the difficult terrain along our northern borders.

This machine seems to fit in exactly for the army.Could have been better if it had some EW equipment like the Tiger helicopter.

Because of delays in its planned induction, the Tejas does not adequately address the current and future threats faced by the IAF. There is a strong case for encouraging the IAF and ADA to think beyond the Tejas
